Solution Statement
For this particular space it was very important to choose the right materials to convey a certain style and look. We have been learning all year the importance of materials selection so we really got to develop a nice space. My designer for this assignment is Warren Platner. He is an interior designer from the 1960s who is most famous from his line of furniture he designed for Knoll. He has is famous for many other spaces including the Windows to the World restaurant. This restaurant was covered in mirrors. I tried to embody many of Platner’s design preferences in my design. I did this by including a lot of metallic finishes, as many of his furniture pieces as I could, and lighting that I believed he would like in his own design. I also included some of his floral rugs and intricate lights as artwork throughout this design. By meshing all of these attributes into one office I believe that I succeeded in completing a design that mirrors one of Warren Platner’s.
Marble Flooring
Marble Tile Flooring
Material-
Product Number: 89487
Color/Model Number: BR2018181P2 (light tan/cream)
Spaced Used: Throughout reception area, hallway, and paralegal areas
Sustainability-
These tiles are made of 70% recycled content and when properly maintained these products will last for a very long period of time. This product also contains to VOCs. The tiles are low maintenance and have a superior life cycle. When sealing the marble it is important to use a sealant that has a very low VOC level.
Installation/Maintenance-
The marble in my space is installed in tile form. The marble is secured in the ground with grout and then polished and sealed. It is important to seal the marble with a low odor, low VOC sealant. Once the marble is installed upkeep is easy. Marble is a very durable material and can be kept up by regularly mopping the areas with a low acidic cleaner. Every few years a marble expert can come out and hone and polish the marble to keep it looking the way you want it to.

Installation/Maintenance
Installation of this product is fairly easy. It is installed just like other carpets. The installation includes no VOCs due to the natural adhesive backing. Maintenance is more difficult than other flooring materials because these carpets are made of wool. It is suggested to use a suction only vacuum and vacuum on a regular basis. It is also suggested to use a cleaner specifically used for wool if a stain appears. Do not be vigorous when cleaning the carpet.

Benjamin Moore offers paints in every color that have zero VOCs. Not only do they have zero VOCs but the new line of paint they now offer (called Gennex) is the first patented waterborne colorant
System. This system is the “greenest” paint option on the market. This is a very high performance, low emissions product.
Installation/Maintenance-
To make this material as effective as it can be you may want to coat several layers on the walls. Once the actual walls are completely painted maintenance is easy. Since this paint is very high performance, it is extremely low maintenance. Every several years the painted walls might need touch ups to make up for fading or stains. To remove stains simply use a wet rag or other cleaning material.

Mirror Wall Panel
Mirror Wall Panels
Material-
Product Name: Dela Marve Mirror
Product color: N/A
Spaces Used: north corridor wall, eastern and western walls in conference room, and offices
Sustainability-
I could not find any especially sustainable or “green” mirrors but I found one company that made mirror wall panels that was a LEED certified company. By being a LEEd certified company you know that most of their operations are done in a environmentally friendly way. The company is focused on creating a low emissions building with a low carbon footprint.
Installation/Maintenance-
Installation of these panels is very easy because these mirror panels are very light weight (roughly 10 pounds each). You just mount them to the wall using wall mountings on the top and bottom of the panel. It is important to not install the wall panels until all dust from construction is gone. Since mirror panels are non-static it makes maintenance minimal. If smudges appear just clean with household glass cleaner. While the Mirror panel is very strong, a hard blow may dent the surface. Dings and dents can be removed with a hot air blower held approximately one inch above the surface and slowly move the blower back and forth. While a sharp instrument could penetrate the surface, the penetration will not run and the remainder of the surface remains undisturbed.
Calculations-
Total sq. ft. Covered in Material: 193 sq. ft.

Ceiling Tiles
Ceiling Tiles

Product Name: Polyline Sustainable Ceiling Panels

Sustainability-
These ceiling panels are ideal for LEED certification. They have a grade-A fire rating. This product is made out of 100% recycled materials. These ceiling panels are made of partly recycled materials and other natural products such as corn. By using these materials these tiles have extremely low VOCs and really help in earning points for LEED certification.
Installation/Maintenance-
These ceiling tiles are installed just as typical tiles. A metal grid is installed in the ceiling and the tiles are places in the grid. Maintenance is fairly as well. These tiles have a long life and only have to be replaced for aesthetic reasons. If the tiles get stained or discolored it is very easy to order single tiles and replace them.

Window Coverings
Window Coverings
Material-
Product Name: Iris Solar Sunscreen Roller Shades (motorized)
Product Color: light grey
Spaces used: conference room, offices and southern most wall of paralegal areas
Sustainability-
Iris, the company that makes these blinds is a member of the U.S. Green Building Company which is the organization that came up with the developed LEED’s Green Building Rating System. This company did this by using materials that are recycled and “green”. These window coverings also help insulate the space by blocking the sun from entering the room. This helps regulate the temperature of the room and not let the sun’s heat penetrate the building.
Installation/Maintenance-
Iris, the company that makes these shades, includes installation in the price of the window coverings. It is important to have professionals install blinds because they can be very difficult to do. Since I am using motorized blinds in my space, this becomes even more important. There are professionals in areas around America that can come to your house/building and install these shades. The materials that make up these shades are made of a very strong and fade resistant material. This means that the maintenance is very easy to keep up.
Calculations-
Total sq. ft. Covered in Material: 120 sq. ft.
